April in Review
I leave the blogosphere for three weeks and the Yankees have the third-best record in the American League?
WHAT?
Don’t get me wrong, I’m excited about the Yankees’ fast start. It’s just that we are more used to the slow starts coming out of Spring Training — hell, the 1998 team that won 114 games started 1-4. The last (only?) time I remember seeing this good a start to a season from the Bombers was 2003 — that team lost Derek Jeter to a shoulder injury on Opening Night and had Erick Almonte replace him for over a month.
No matter, the first month of the season has been very enjoyable to watch. Some of the highlights:
- Two near no-hitters in less than two weeks — CC Sabathia in St. Pete and Phil Hughes in Oakland
- Andy Pettitte’s time-traveling back to 1996 (3-0, 1.29 ERA in 4 starts)
- Robbie Cano’s emergence as a true threat in #5 spot (team leader in H, AVG, SLG, OPS, HR, RBI, TB)
- Brett Gardner making us forget Johnny Damon and Melky Cabrera
- Heartfelt hero’s welcome for World Series MVP Hideki Matsui at 4/13 home opener. I think it’s safe to say Damon won’t get the same type of reception
Get ready, Yankees fans — it’s gonna be one helluva ride to title #28.

Smoov’s Law
As many of you already know (and for those who don’t know), I work as a security officer at Yankee Stadium. I’ve been there since 2008 — my reflection on working the last season at the old Stadium was featured on The LoHud Yankees Blog — and this coming season will be my third with Securitas, the company that was enlisted by the Yankees. From being able to watch every game to interacting with very passionate and knowledgeable fans, I can say that I am truly blessed to be employed at baseball’s cathedral.
This job has also helped me reach 200+ followers on Twitter (look to the right), some of the most intelligent and fun-loving Yankees fans I’ve talked baseball with. Now while I love them to death, only a few of them have visited me at work. So I’m writing this post tonight to let everyone know the deal for 2010:
- I work at section 120a-120b on the field level, directly adjacent from Gate 4. You’ll immediately recognize it by noticing the giant black drape, dubbed “Shaq’s Shower Curtain”.
- All fans who plan to attend a game must stop by the aforementioned section and say “hi” to me. Staying at 120a-120b for the whole game is not mandatory, but I will try my hardest to seat you in the immediate area.
If you forget the first bulletpoint and/or fail to carry out the second bulletpoint, I’m coming for you — one way or another. There are absolutely NO EXCUSES for not stopping by my section from this season on.
Enjoy the Spring Training games, and I hope to see you guys at the Stadium this season!
Back for 2010
So I come in from getting lunch earlier this afternoon, when I see a letter from Securitas regarding my potential employment at Yankee Stadium for 2010 (For those that don’t know I’m an usher/security officer at the Stadium). While I wasn’t expecting to hear from the job just yet, I thought it was good that they would reach out to me when they did. I open the letter after getting upstairs and find this at the top:
“Hello Christopher Johnson:
The 2010 New York Yankees’ baseball season will begin on April 13th. To that end we are preparing ourselves to better service the NYY, baseball’s 2009 World Series Champions and their Guests! After successfully completing the first season in the new stadium you are fully aware of what is expected of you. And because you have demonstrated that you are willing to go the extra mile for the client and their Guests you are being welcomed back.“
That’s right — your favorite usher/security officer will be back at the Stadium for the 2010 season.
I just want to say that it has been an honor and privilege to work to service the Yankees fans over the previous two seasons. I have had so much fun being able to help provide the best customer service, and I have been blessed to meet so many of my Twitter followers and Facebook friends throughout that time. I am most certainly looking forward to catching up with those of you I have already met and meeting more of you in the new decade.
Once again, I’ll be back at the Stadium as an usher/security officer this coming season. Keep up with me on Twitter and Facebook for updates on where exactly I’ll be posted.
One love,
Smoov
